Sangeetha Kalanidhi

The title of Sangita Kalanidhi is awarded yearly to an expert Carnatic musician. It is among the highest honors a Carnatic musician can receive. However, like the Nobel Prize, there are many who deserved it and never got it, though the reverse may not be true. It is also not the only award that musicians can receive - honors like Padmabhushan, Nada Brahmam (Narada Gana Sabha), Isai Peroli (Kartik Fine Arts), Sangita Kala Shikhamani (Indian Fine Arts), Sangita Kala Nipuna (Mylapore Fine Arts), Sangita Kala Sarathy (Parthasarathy Swami Sabha), Isai Perarignar (Tamil Isai Sangam), Sangita Kala Rathna (RR Sabha), Sangeetha Jothi (Kapali Fine Arts)

Before 1942, there was no Sangitha Kalanidhi - only president of the annual conference at the Music Academy in Madras (those are listed below). There were 3 presidents the first year, and T.S. Sabesa Iyer became president again in 1934. In 1930, there were two presidents. Technically, Mazhavarayanendal Subbarama Bhagavatar received the award for the first time in 1942 but the Academy decided all the previous presidents would also be considered awardees from then on (3 of the previous presidents were already deceased). The award is given by election, though earlier it was an electoral college.
Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer asked the Academy to give it to his Guru, Maharajapuram Viswanatha Iyer, before he did. Alathur Subbu Iyer made the Academy promise his partner Seenu Iyer would receive the award the next year. As for instruments, many violinists but only a few mridangam artists, a few nadaswaram artists, a few vainikas, and a few flautists have received the award, and no ghatam, morsing, or kanjira artists have. ML Vasantakumari is the youngest woman to get the award at 49.

An Incident That Earned Smt.M.S.Subbulakshmi The Bharat Ratna

Sri Venkateswara Suprabhatam is a series of hymns written,in poetic form,by Pratvada Bhayankara Sri Anantacharya in 1430 A.D…This work of poetic art was meant for singing praises of Lord Sri Venkateswara, while waking Him up early in the morning, every day..It contains four major parts namely Suprabhatam,Sri Venkateswara Stothram,Srinivasa Prapatti and Mangalaasasanam…All the vedic scholars, brahmins, archaks and purohits of the holy Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam stand in front of the main entrance of the sanctum sanctorum of the Lord Sri Venkateswara temple in Tirumala at 3 a m every day and recite Sri Venkateswara Suprabhatam,in chorus,to wake up the holy Lord. Called Suprabhata Seva this is a holy ritual in practice in Tirumala ever since Venkateswara Suprabhatam was written. With this album M.S.Subbulakshmi became an iconic personality in the world of Indian devotional music and today there is hardly any Hindu house in Southern India that doesn’t play this album and hardly any Hindu personality who doesn’t recite it fully.

Blessing PVRK Prasad the Paramacharya said “Your idea is brilliant Prasad.. M.S.Subbulakshmi has millions of fans all over the world and they will come running to help her in this hour of crisis..However,M.S Subbulakshmi and Sadasivam are a very reserved couple with an unimaginable degree of high self esteem and honor..So far they lived life on their own terms and will never accept any unsolicited favor not even from God..So be careful..They should not think that you went there on a mission to offer financial assistance and if they smell it they will reject your offer outright.. This is a very sensitive matter Prasad and I know you can handle it carefully..Good luck”
After successfully completing it’s recording in 1980,the devotional music album “Balaji Pancharatnamala” was simultaneously released all over India,in an unprecedented fashion..While the first LP was released by the then President of India Mr.Neelam Sanjeeva Reddy, the second was released by the Prime Minister Mrs.Indira Gandhi..Rest of the three albums were released by the chief ministers and governors in their respective states..The fifth album was released by the Peetadhipathis of various holy Peethams spread  all over India. This album also went on to break all the previous records in India thus making M.S.Subbulakshmi a household name all over the country. In 1998 the government of India honored M.S.Subbulakshmi with the country’s highest civilian award, the “Bharat Ratna” for revolutionizing devotional classical music in India and also for earning recognition to Indian classical music all over the world..Unfortunately Sadasivam was not there to witness this once in a life time event as he passed away just a year before that in 1997.

One of my e-mail friend has forwarded this excellent presentation. I just searched for the original script and traced it from the following link.
